Joining our School
A warm welcome from year 7. Reflections on the first month at Haggerston School.
The transition to secondary school can be daunting. One of our new Year 7 students wanted to share their thoughts with you.
My name is Archie and I am in 7 Blue… the best tutor group in the year, obviously.
I am here today to tell you about my first day. I really enjoyed my first tutor time, even though I was really excited and a tiny bit nervous to have my first lesson.
I battled my tiny amount of nerves and shared my ideas and the whole class got credits after for our first good impressions. I felt really happy to know that I got rewards on my first proper day at Haggerston School.
My favourite subject is drama- as I feel comfortable in this lesson as I am confident when it comes to performing, although I really like cooking yummy foods at home and love the food technology lessons that link to this creative passion. I also liked the credits I received in my lesson for art- within the creative and visual arts Faculty, as I did an excellent detailed homework and was really proud of my creativity, a key part of The Haggerston Way.
The YR7 playground - for Year 7s only- is really impressive and it is designed amazingly. My new friends and I enjoy socialising, playing and talking about the number of credits we have received that morning everyday.
I feel really well supported because my teachers really help me when I need guidance and when I need reassurance in my lessons.
If I had to recommend Haggerston to you I would say:
- Students are friendly
- Staff are really helpful and kind
- There is lots to do at lunchtime especially in the separate YR7 garden
- We all get to do an enrichment on Friday
- It is a safe space
- And I already feel… I belong
Top tips for starting secondary school.
- Watch out for all the extra things you can take part in. These might be announced in assembly or during tutor time, in lessons or advertised on posters around school. Auditions for the school production will take place in October.
- Make sure you have thought about how and where you will do your homework in September (about an hour per night) so that you are ready to get into really positive home learning habits as soon as you start in September.
- Have a look at the clubs we offer once you have started with us at Haggerston. Join up and join in and have lots of fun.
- Join our summer school - it's a great way to get to know the school site and meet some friends / staff early on. This will help make your September start easier.
- Don’t be scared to ask for help or ask questions, we all find it tricky to be in a new environment where we don’t know anyone yet. If you find learning or social situations challenging, ask for me and I will be more than happy to help you.
Timetable
Lessons are 55 minutes each but most of them are taught as doubles (1 hour 50 minutes) as you will see from the image of a Year 7 timetable below. Can you count how many different subjects you will study?
Recommended Reading
Reading is one of the most important aspects of primary education. Reading opens up new worlds and new possibilities; it gives us a glimpse of utopia and dystopia. It broadens our minds and provides us with new perspectives. Moreover, it allows us to access the, sometimes, complex language of exam papers.
Have a look at our Year 6 Transition Reading List. Lots of these books are available in our school Library. You can also find them easily in local libraries, such as:
- Shoreditch Library: 80 Hoxton St, London N1 6LP
- Bethnal Green library: Cambridge Heath Road, London E2 0HL
- Hackney Central library: 1 Reading Lane, London E8 1GQ
Special Education Needs and Disabilities Offer
Dear parents and future Haggerston students,
My name is Ms Honorio and I am the Special educational needs and disabilities coordinator at Haggerston. Hopefully you have received our SEND Transition booklet outlining what our SEND provision looks like. We’ve also sent some transitional activities that might be helpful to do during the summer holidays to get ready to start your new academic year! Parents, please rest assured that although transition has not gone according to our usual transition schedule, we will be holding SEND coffee mornings for parents within the first two weeks of September so we can get to know you and you can get to know us, in addition to the regular Y7 Information Evening that is planned as well. Year 7 will have a chance to settle into Haggerston and they will be supported to do this by the pastoral team and Inclusion team. For more information on Haggerston’s SEND provision, please read or request our SEND Information report, which is available on our website. This document states how we identify, assess, plan and review students with additional needs and what you can expect from us to help you and your child to succeed at Haggerston. If you have any questions or would like to get in touch, please email the SENDCO email on: senco@haggerston.hackney.sch.uk
Looking forward to meeting you all, Ms Honorio.
Meet Us
Opportunities to Meet Us
We are planning to hold a transition event where we will invite parents and carers into our school. You will have an opportunity to hear from a senior leader and learn about how our school runs, including the rewards and sanctions and our curriculum. This is an important first step in supporting your child as they begin their transition into secondary school and we will be writing to you to let you know when this event will take place.
Transition Day
For current Year 6 students, the date of our Transition Day will be confirmed.
Summer School
Every year we offer 70 places to students in year 6 who are starting at Haggerston in September. The Summer school is 3 days long and runs at the end of August. The idea is to make new friends, have fun and be confident with the new space
Summer school 2024 – a great success!
