What topics will you study in KS4 English?

English Language Students will explore a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to help prepare them for English Language Paper 1 and English Language Paper 2. English Literature Students will learn, revise and consolidate the analysis of the following GCSE texts: Macbeth by William Shakespeare Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson An Inspector Calls by J B Priestley Conflict and the Worlds and Lives Poetry Cluster by AQA.

In addition to the GCSE texts outlined above, the following 19th century novels/texts are also recommended:

  • Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
  • Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  • David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
  • Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
  • The Sign of Four by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  • Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • Dracula by Bram Stoker

To help your child excel they should be encouraged to be independent in researching and accessing age ability appropriate reading which can be sought in the school library.

How can you help your child excel in this subject?

Talk to your child regualrly about the text they are reading lin lesson. Test your child on memorisation of key quotes being learnt in English. Check they are completing their homework in a quiet and calm environment with no distractions.
